Cameron
County
The Cameron County courthouse was built in 1912 of
brick and stone in Texas Renaissance style.
It was designed by Atlee B. Ayres and built at a cost of $200,000. A
story tells of the courthouse contractor leaving the construction of the building
to “celebrate life.” The architect, Ayres, found the contractor in a bar and
persuaded him to quit so he could hire somebody else to complete the job.
